How Much Do Family Photos Cost in Kansas City? (2026 Prices)

What family photos, mini sessions, newborn and maternity sessions cost in Kansas City in 2026, what is included at each price, and the extra costs (permits, prints, travel) to plan for.

Family photos in Kansas City cost anywhere from under $200 for a short mini session to $750 or more for a long session with prints. The price mostly depends on three things: how long the session is, how many edited photos you get, and whether the digital files are included or sold separately. This guide shows typical Kansas City prices in 2026, what each price usually includes, and the extra costs people forget to plan for. My own prices are listed alongside, because I publish them.

The quick answer

Session Typical Kansas City price Kichdimna Photography
Mini session (fall or holiday) $200–$295 for 10–15 minutes, 5–10 images $185 for 20 minutes, 15+ images
Family session, about 1 hour $300–$750 $275 for 60 minutes, 35+ images
Extended family / grandparents Often quoted individually $395 for 90 minutes, 60+ images
Newborn $500–$700 In-home from $275; Fresh 48 hospital session $475
Maternity $300–$675 at established studios From $225

Typical prices are ranges seen on Kansas City photographers' published price pages. Many photographers don't publish prices at all, so treat the ranges as a guide, not a rule.

What changes the price

Session length. A 20-minute mini is enough for one location and a handful of group and individual shots. An hour gives you time for an outfit change, a second spot, and photos of each child on their own. Ninety minutes is what large families with grandparents need, because every combination (each household, the cousins, the grandparents with all the grandchildren) takes a few minutes.

How many edited photos. Compare the number of finished images, not just the price. A $275 mini with five images costs $55 per photo; a $185 mini with fifteen costs about $12.

Digital files or prints. Some studios include the session but sell digital files separately or in collections afterwards, which can double the final bill. Ask before you book: "Are all the edited images included as downloads?"

Studio or outdoors. Studio sessions and holiday sets cost more to run. Outdoor sessions at parks don't, but some parks charge a permit fee (below).

Experience and demand. Photographers with long waiting lists charge more, and popular fall weekends book out first.

Extra costs to plan for

  • Location fees. KC Parks charges $25 an hour for posed portraits in Loose Park. Union Station charges $25 for small informal groups and $75 for formal sessions. Liberty Memorial's grounds, most Johnson County parks, and your own backyard are free. The Kansas City photography permit guide lists each location's current rule.
  • Travel. Many photographers add a travel fee past a set distance. My sessions include travel within 40 miles of Kansas City.
  • Prints and albums. Printing through a lab costs extra everywhere. If you only want digital files for cards and social media, choose a package that includes them.
  • Outfits. Coordinated outfits are the hidden cost most families forget. The what to wear guide shows how to coordinate with what you already own.
  • Rescheduling. Ask what happens if it rains or a child is sick. I reschedule weather days at no charge.

How to choose

  1. Decide what you need the photos for. Holiday cards need 2–3 strong group photos, so a mini is enough. A wall gallery or a family with three generations needs the longer session.
  2. Compare the cost per finished image, with digital files included.
  3. Look at full galleries, not just the highlight photos. Every photographer's best ten look good; the rest of the gallery shows what you will actually get.
  4. Ask who handles the permit and whether the fee is included.
  5. Book early for October and December. Fall color peaks in the last week of October, and holiday minis fill up in early November.
