Your headshot works around the clock — on LinkedIn, your company site, conference bios, press mentions. It's doing a first impression right now, while you read this. Here's how to make sure it's doing a good one.
The 2026 look: approachable authority
The gray-mottled-backdrop, arms-crossed corporate portrait is dead, and nothing of value was lost. What replaced it:
- Natural or natural-looking light instead of heavy studio flash
- Real environments — office spaces, architectural backdrops — gently blurred
- Relaxed confidence over stiff formality: genuine near-smile, straight-to-camera
- Consistency across the team that still lets individuals look like themselves
The goal is the colleague you'd want to grab coffee with, who also clearly runs the meeting.
What separates professional from phone-photo
Modern phones make sharp images; they don't make flattering ones. A professional headshot differs in lens compression (an 85mm portrait lens renders faces the way eyes see them — wide phone lenses subtly distort), light shaping, honest-but-kind retouching, and most of all coaching. The difference between a tense jaw and a relaxed one is one sentence from a good photographer at the right moment.
For individuals: preparing well
- Wear solid, mid-tone colors one notch above your daily wardrobe. Full styling advice: what to wear.
- Sleep — it out-performs any retouching.
- Haircuts a week ahead, never the day before.
- Bring two outfit options; a five-second swap doubles your usable looks.
For teams: the consistency problem
Team pages fail one of two ways: everyone shot by different photographers in different light (chaos), or everyone forced into one rigid template (mugshots). The fix is a repeatable on-site setup — same light, same backdrop family, same framing — with individual coaching inside it. New hires slot in seamlessly months later.
